The endocannabinoid system might sound a little confusing, but don’t worry, we’ve read all about it so you don’t have to.
Scientists have spent decades trying to understand the effects of THC on the human body and how it interacts with our bodily functions. In this search for answers, the endocannabinoid system was discovered. So what is the ECS and how does it relate to cannabis consumption? We’ve done the research and are now passing on this knowledge to all of you lovely folks!
The endocannabinoid system is a group of cell receptors that respond to messages from chemical molecules. There are two main cell receptors: Cannabinoid Receptor 1 which is primarily found in the central nervous system, and Cannabinoid Receptor 2 which is concentrated in the peripheral nervous system, immune cells, and gastrointestinal tract. Endocannabinoids are the chemical molecules that attach to cell receptors and deliver messages.
Endocannabinoid receptors have been found all over the human body. The messages received from endocannabinoids assist in the regulation of several bodily functions. Here is a short list:
- Memory
- Fertility
- Pain
- Motor Control
- Sleep
- Appetite and Digestion
- Mood
The endocannabinoid system has one ultimate goal: homeostasis. These receptors work to make sure everything in our bodies is running smoothly. As mentioned, endocannabinoids control the motion of these functions, which means if the ECS experiences disorder then the body’s balance will be out of whack.
Some professionals believe that a disrupted ECS may be the cause of some diagnosis like multiple sclerosis or fibromyalgia. Many doctors are understanding that an efficient cannabinoid system is integral to our overall health and well-being.
So what does this have to do with cannabis? Well, endocannabinoids are pretty much the body’s natural version of THC. Our receptors respond to THC as they do our natural endocannabinoids. This means that THC can be an effective means of improving our body’s homeostasis.
